Scope and Contents

Collection comprises multiple documents from three members of the Ely family, Ben-Ezra Stiles Ely, his father Ezra Stiles Ely, and his brother Samuel Carswell Ely. This includes the handwritten autobiography of Ben-Ezra Stiles Ely, handwritten and printed official law documents of Ezra Stiles Ely and his wife Caroline Thompson Holmes Ely, and a land certificate of Samuel Carswell Ely.

Biographical / Historical

Ben-Ezra Stiles Ely was first an adventurer/sailor/jack-of-all-trades. Eventually he settled down and became a lawyer and a government official in California. Later on he followed his father's example and became a clergyman. He was married twice and had at least seven children. He lived in multiple states including Pennsylvania, Delaware, California, Illinois, and Iowa.

Ezra Stiles Ely was a clergyman and writer who lived in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Tennessee. He was married twice and had approximately nine children, at least four of whom lived to adulthood. He made an effort to associate with people who were impoverished in his work.

Samuel Carswell Ely, M.D. from Pennsylvania, was the son of Ezra Stiles Ely and the brother of Ben-Ezra Stiles Ely.

Custodial History

Collection was originally created/assembled by Ben-Ezra Stiles Ely, Ezra Stiles Ely, and Samuel Carswell Ely in the 19th and 20th centuries. Their papers were left to the college by Dr. Curtis Dahl, descendent of the Elys and former Wheaton College professor of English from 1948 to 1991.
