Personal, 1916-1926
Scope and Contents
The SAMUEL VALENTINE COLE series mainly details Samuel Valentine Cole's life while president of Wheaton College. The series spans the years 1878 to 1975 with the bulk dates between 1897 to 1925, which coincides with his term as president. Sub-series include: Biographical Information and Remarks, Correspondence, Publications, Writings, and Speeches, Pamphlets and Programs, Personal, and Objects and Clothing. Samuel Valentine Cole's writings and publications compose the largest part of the collection. Within the Correspondence: Personal sub-series the files are organized into two sections: chronological and individuals. This sub-series contains correspondence to and from Samuel Valentine Cole. Notable correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge, Chief Justice Arthur P. Rugg, and Charles Edward Stowe. Within the Publications sub-series, the Poetry sub-series is arranged alphabetically while the Manuscripts sub-series is arranged numerically as assigned by Samuel Valentine Cole except for the first file which contains his writings as a student. There are gaps in the numbers which can mostly likely be explained by the possibility that some manuscripts were lost. The Pamphlets and Programs sub-series contain information about Cole's speaking engagements. The Personal and Objects and Clothing sub-series are scattered with little organization.
