Scope and Contents

The collection roughly documents her years at Wheaton, 1912-1914, then shifts to documenting her time at Smith College, 1914-1918. Contents include: Notes and correspondences, report cards, tickets, telegraphs, tree bark, student handbooks, and a good deal of theater programs as well as some choral and orchestral programs. The entire fourth section consists of lists of plays she saw, where she saw them, the lead actors, the date, who she went with and her comments on them, as well as the programs to these plays. The vast majority of the programs in this section are from the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA. Other programs for plays and other shows are scattered throughout the scrapbook.

Biographical / Historical

Emily T. Bush, later Emily T. Stout, graduated from Wheaton Female Seminary in 1914 before graduating from Smith College in 1918 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her father was Reverend M.S Bush of Charlotte, NY. She was a patron of the arts, frequently attending plays and concerts wherever she lived. She was also an active member in her local Christian communities, being a card holding member of the National Board of the Young Women's Christian Association and attending the Christian Association meetings at Wheaton during her time here. She took Latin and German, among other courses, while here. Additionally, Emily would go to dances frequently, both at her attended institutions and at others.

Arrangement

Object is maintained in its original order upon creation and donation. Within, the scrapbook moves roughly chronologically from 1911 to 1918 from start to end. There are 5 physical sections, each held together with two staples, sometimes with a disconnected page between sections.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The scrapbook was transferred to the Wheaton Archives from the Rhinebeck Historical Society in October 2023.

Separated Materials

A metal paperclip and a blank envelope that had an unidentified object inside that was causing damage to the envelope and items surrounding it were deaccessioned from the collection.
