General
This collection of records contains materials produced at Wheaton in 1969 and 1970 about the Vietnam War. The college held a moratorium on October 15, 1969, in protest of the war, and went on strike in May, 1970. The 1969 moratorium was partially condoned by the administration, with a few faculty and administrators vocally opposed to the action. The May 1970 strike began as a student movement and later faculty voted at a meeting to join them in strike. At the end of the strike, students asked professor Paul Helmreich to deliver a speech at commencement explaining the action to the public. Helmreich, who had recently quit smoking, took it up again in the few days he had to draft his address.
