Eunice Caldwell Cowles was the principal of Wheaton Seminary from 1835-1837.
Eunice Caldwell Cowles graduated from the Ipswich Female Seminary in 1829. She worked as teacher at the Ipswich Female Seminary following her graduation until she was hired as principal of Wheaton Seminary in 1835. She stayed at Wheaton until 1837 when she was given a position under Mary Lyon at Mount Holyoke. Here she met her husband Reverend John Phelps Cowles. Reverend Cowles was a professor of Hebrew at Oberlin College and he returned there with Eunice Caldwell Cowles after they were married on October 6, 1838. Reverend Cowles resigned from his position there in 1844. Eunice Caldwell Cowles and her husband then went to Ipswich where they reopened Ipswich Female Seminary as joint principals. Eunice Caldwell Cowles also volunteered at the First Church in Ipswich and was the president of Foreign Missions. Eunice Caldwell Cowles and Reverend Cowles operated the Seminary until 1876 when it had to be closed due to their old age. Eunice Caldwell Cowles died September 10, 1903 at her home in Ipswich, Mass.
