General
"The top row across has Chinese characters and the second row Manchu characters and so on down the page. Each cash indicates a different sin such as envy, jealousy, lack of filial piety, failure to worship the gods, lying, stealing, murder, coveteousness, etc. etc. This paper is burned for the dead so, in case they have committed any of these sins, they will escape their punishment."
Emily Hartwell, Foochow China, circa 1890
