Biographical note

Alfred Sheppard Dashiell was born on April 29, 1901 in Snow Hill, Maryland. Dashiell was a member of the Princeton University class of 1923 and went on to work for The Baltimore Evening Sun, New York World, Boston Transcript, and The New York Evening Post. He served as editor of Scribner’s and Reader’s Digest. Dashiell also wrote himself, producing several works including How Not to Write Short Stories and Editor’s Choice. He passed away on October 5, 1970.

Alfred S. Dashiell was an American writer and editor. His papers relate primarily to his time as editor of Scribner’s and Reader’s Digest. Letters, memorabilia, and incomplete manuscripts of Thomas Wolfe appear, along with letters from other authors, assorted correspondence, and papers dealing with the Princeton matters of Terrace Club, Graduate Council, Hibben Fund, and Class of 1923 reunions.
