Biographical note

Ann W. Caldwell received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Michigan in 1965. She is President Emerita of the MGH Institute of Health Professions, a degree granting graduate school, where she served for ten years (1997-2007). She began her career as a newspaper reporter and was editor of the Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni magazine and research newsletter. She was writer and editor for the Radcliffe Institute and for an early conference on feminist scholarship. She served as Vice President for Resources at Wheaton College (1980-1990) and Vice President for Development at Brown University (1991-1997) where she was the first woman to be the chief development officer in the Ivy League.

Since 2008, Caldwell has been a Visiting and Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center, Brandeis University, Waltham, Ma. She currently consults for a number of non-profit organizations, focusing on executive leadership, board development, strategic planning and governance. The former chair of the Commission on Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education, she is currently a trustee and vice chair of the board of the American College of Greece in Athens.

Caldwell continues to research a full-length biography of Catherine Filene Shouse W1918 (1896-1994), philanthropist, author and advocate for women’s professional development. Born in Boston, she lived her adult life in Washington D.C. where she knew every US president from Coolidge to Clinton.

Caldwell lives in E. Greenwich, RI with her husband Herbert C. Caldwell. Their daughter Haley graduated from Wheaton.
