Samuel Austin Chapin, 1811-1890 (Wheaton Trustee, 1890)

b. Northbridge, MA, 2 Sept. 1811; d. San Francisco, 17 Arp. 1890; younger brother of Eliza Baylies Chapin Wheaton; lived 10 years in Michigan; Brigadier General in Black Hawk War; moved to California 1850; San Francisco merchant and member of Board of Education; moved to Nevada Territory in 1860 ; miner; operated sawmill; Virginia City alderman; delegate to the 1863 and 1864 constitutional conventions; Wheaton Female Seminary Trustee, 1889-1890; active in Norton town affairs after returning from west. Chapin Hall at Wheaton College is named for him.
