San Francisco, 17 Arp. 1890; younger brother of Eliza Baylies Chapin Wheaton; lived 10 years in Michigan; Brigadier General in Black Hawk War; moved to California 1850; San Francisco merchant and member of Board of Education; moved to Nevada Territory in 1860 ; miner; operated sawmill; Virginia City alderman; delegate to the 1863 and 1864 constitutional conventions; Wheaton Female Seminary Trustee, 1889-1890; active in Norton town affairs after returning from west. Chapin Hall at Wheaton College is named for him.

The Wheaton Family Collection covers the years 1721-2009. The bulk of the collection relates to the years 1779-1905. The collection shows the activities of an affluent family in the small town of Norton, MA. Laban Morey Wheaton and Eliza Baylies Chapin Wheaton were both active in the community, and established Wheaton Female Seminary.
