Holcombe McCullough Austin (1906-2003) served as a professor of philosophy at Wheaton College from 1941 to 1990. A graduate of Davidson College and Harvard University, Holcombe first came to Wheaton in the 1920s with the Harvard Glee Club, performing in the chapel. His wife, Ethelind, was a longtime Wheaton Library employee. The couple maintained ties to the West: Ethelind was an accomplished horseback rider and grand-niece of the Colorado Territorial Governor Samuel Elbert.
