Scope and Contents

This collection consists of diaries and notebooks kept by the Chase family of Lowell, Massachusetts between 1874 and 1909. The first series contains the diaries of Mrs. J. M. Chase, who journaled about daily household activities such as gardening, cooking, family news, and church activities. The second series consists of the stuy notebooks of Roscoe Chase, who attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1882 to 1884. The final series contains other assorted Chase family material from the same time period.

Biographical / Historical

The Chase Family was a failry large well-to-do family in Lowell, Massachusetts. Ira Chase, the father of the family, ran a meat market from 1852 to 1887. Fred and Kimball took over the business on September 30, 1887, for the price of $2500. The Chases owned several properties, including tenements on Frmont Street, and a cottage.

The Chases had eight children: Clara, born on 3/6/1849. She married Roscoe Turner in 1868 and they had two cildren, Clara Frances and Ernest. Clara died in 1872; Clara Frances in 1876. Roscoe Turner died in 1886, having remarried. Fred, born on 7/18/1851. He moved to California in May 1873 with Frank Evans. Fred later married Lauretta "Retta" Cunningham on 10/25/1877. He returned to Lowell in 1879, and had four children (Eva, Ralph, Walter, and Marguerite). He moved back to California in 1890. Laura, born on 9/4/1853. She went to school in New London in 1870. She did not marry, and continued to live with her parents and care for the house. An active member of the church, she taught Sunday School and was an officer of the Missionary Society. Maria, born on 6/10/1856, died on 12/30/1856. Eddie was born on 11/28/1857. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1876-1880. He married Lizzie Jewet in 1882 and had two sons, Kirk and Reginald. He worked in a mine in Colorado and later for Standard Oil in Mexico, laying railroad tracks. Roscoe was born on 10/25/1860. He helped his father run the family meat shop and later attended MIT from 1880-1884. He worked in Philadelphia and in Albany. He was a Professor of Chemistry at the School of Industrial Art in 1887. In 1888 he married Nellie Colton, with whom he had one daughter named Marion. They later settled in North Adams, MA. Nettie was born on 9/2/1866 and died of an illness on 10/28/1883. Harry was born on 1/15/1872. He attended MIT beginning in 1890, and later returned to MIT for a master's degree in 1895.
