Sarah and Anna Kempton Papers
Scope and Contents
The Sarah Kempton collection contains two letters from Sarah Kempton to her cousin Rebecca Bailey regarding the summer of 1844, and from Sarah and her sister Anna M. B. Kempton to Rebecca discussing the regulations of Wheaton Seminary, 1844. The letters contain light-hearted descriptions of plans for summer activities and youthful exchanges between cousins. Sarah's drawing book, created while she was a student at the Seminary in 1844, contains fanciful sketches of scenery and stonework.

Biography
Sarah and Anna Kempton, the daughters of William W. Kempton and Sarah (Bailey) Kempton, were from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Anna attended Wheaton Seminary from 1842 to 1844, while Sarah attended from 1842 to 1845.
Sarah, born May 1, 1826, married Jacob Soule Parker in 1847. They had ten children and continued to live in New Bedford. She probably died on Sept. 9, 1906.

Abstract
The collection contains two letters written by Sarah and Anna Kempton, as well as Sarah's drawing book, and black lace mitts. The letters are dated 1844.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The sketchbook and letters were donated to Wheaton by Sarah Kempton Parker's granddaughter, Alice Washburn Dahlen, 162 Main St., Kingston, MA, in February 1956. It is not clear if she also donated the lace mitts.
Collection description entered into database in 2008.
Separated Materials
The black lace mitts have been physically separated from the Sarah Kempton Collection, and relocated to drawer 22.
