Materials of Martha Vose Emerson, 1842 - 1910

 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This Small Manuscript Collection consists of the nineteenth-century papers of the Emerson family of Massachusetts. The Emersons were deeply involved in Wheaton's educational project: Martha Vose Emerson served as Seminary Principal from 1840-1842. Alfred Emerson served as treasurer of the school as well as trustee. Annie Austin Emerson and Francis Vose Emerson were alumnae, and Frances later served as trustee. Emerson Dining Hall is named for this family. The materials span the entire nineteenth century, and contain family correspondence, newspaper clippings, sermons, speeches, and programs. The collection grants greater insight into the life and dealings of a white, respected, Victorian-era family. The Emerson Family in this collection is unrelated to later Wheaton President, Alice Frey Emerson.
