Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Dr. Jennings was passionate about giving due diligence to the women scientists who made significant contributions to their field. She was disappointed in how little literature there was about women scientists, a fact that became obvious to her over the years as she received reports on the same few women from her students every year after assigning them a research paper on significant women scientists. Determined to provide her students with a better understanding of their field and the significant role women have played in it, she embarked on a project highlighting notable American women scientists. She conducted research on Garvan medalists as well as Nobel Prize recipients. Later on, she undertook a very ambitious project spotlighting the lives and work of Professors Emma Carr, Mary Sherrill and Lucy Pickett; this work culminated in a short publication entitled, “Professors Carr, Sherrill, and Pickett: Selected Works and Memoirs” in 1983. The papers for both projects are included in this grouping; these papers include her notes, bibliographies, correspondences, transcribed interviews and manuscript edits. One interesting feature within this grouping is a series of correspondences between the Smithsonian Institute and Dr. Jennings in which the Smithsonian requested materials from Wheaton Female Seminary to be included in a larger exhibition on the scientific education of women in America. Dr. Jennings loaned apparatuses from the Wheaton collection to be included in the Chemistry portion of the exhibition; the Smithsonian pamphlet, which credits Wheaton for its loan, is included in these papers.
